More Backs of Heads

I know sketches of backs of heads are not that interesting, but when you are in a crowd listening to lectures at a professional workshop, you can’t really turn around to sketch peoples faces. Oh I know, I could have sketched the speakers faces but to be honest, I wasn’t brave enough to try since I was working with an ink pen. So now you know the real reason for the boring sketches! But getting the volume of the skull, the placement of ears, and the stance of the shoulders is challenge enough for me right now. Maybe I’ll try faces next time…with pencil.

Comments

  1. These are great. Good work of the contours of a 3/4 turn of the head from the back.

  2. These are very well done. I was trying to sketch the back of a head at a restaurant today and ran into all kinds of problems. So this is as good a subject to tackle as any, I think.

  3. I know what you mean about skipping the speaker’s face, plus you have to gaze so intently and worry about if you’re starring to hard at the person….great job over all and I love the touches of color.

  4. Hooray for the back of heads. They have kept me busy for hours – at airports, on buses, trains … Very brave to draw in ink !

  5. Not boring at all, and every one of them very well done! nancy

  6. Nice mood conveyed in each – so much more expressive than we might believe, and you did well capturing them.

  7. All of these are very good, and NOT boring at all! Great practice and great use of time!

  8. Good use of time. Lovely vignettes.

  9. I love how the way you show personalities from drawing their backs. They are great, and each of them are trying to tell a short story somehow. And I think that’s how a piece of good art works…it tells a story ^^

  10. I do get a sense of “listening” from all of these. Wonderful sketches!

  11. Thank you everyone! Although faces are much more interesting than backs of heads, they are an advanced challenge. Backs of heads are a nice intermediate step!

I would love to hear from you...
