Magnolia Blossom

I cropped a photo that John took of a Magnolia blossom awhile ago. Isn’t the developing seed amazing? This is a values study in graphite, and I hope to do the drawing again in other mediums. I find backgrounds very difficult and am not too sure whether I like this one or not.

    Keep up the good work.

  2. What a wonderful study of a difficult subject. I like the background too.

  3. I like the way this background pulls the eye to the centre of the flower, the focus of your drawing.

  4. Beautiful tone work! I have difficulty deciding backgrounds too!

  5. This is a gorgeous drawing! I think the background can be a little darker to provide more contrast and make the foreground pop, but overall, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the background. Beautiful work!

  7. The seed is like a crown. I think your background is very well done and enhances the drawing – it’s like there is a halo of light around the seed. The petals seem so delicate. Beautiful drawing. Well done.

  8. Beautiful study of magnolia, delicate and sensitive, I like your choice of background.

  9. Thank you for your kind comments.

  10. This is exquisite! The background is great too, but the detail to the seed is superb! Well done!

  11. Love it. Halo around the seed subliminally enhances the beauty of the amazing central seed head. You have such a sweet touch! Softness.

    Gorgeous.
