Sketchcrawl In Laurelhurst

We had a very fun day sketching in the Laurelhurst neighborhood today. These are my sketches of the Old Laurelhurst Church, built in 1923. After all the rain we’ve had lately, it felt so good to be out in the sunshine and warmth, although I did have long john’s on and wool socks so that helped!

Everyone else got lots of sketches done, but I am so slow that I only got two partly finished–I added a bit more color after I got home. I did the first one with pencil and watercolors and the second was cold turkey with pen. I added color with watercolor pencils later. Being able to use an eraser while I am laying out the sketch is a great luxury, but it’s nice to force myself to commit with pen sometimes too. I do like the pencil and watercolor sketch much better.

  1. Both sketches are lovely. We are alike in that I prefer to work with pencil so I have the option of erasing too. I am trying to get out of that habit and just accept what I put down the first time more often.

  2. Wonderful architectural lines! You’ve a terrific idea to do a pencil study first, then going straight to pen on the second piece. I want to try that process; I think it would give me time to settle down before moving into pen on a second study. Thanks!

  3. Wonderful delineation of a building, what is a “sketchcrawl?” I admire your continued efforts to sketch difficult subjects, job well done!

  4. I love both of them! The colors are so soft and calm, yes the helped so much to reveal the beauty of the structures. Your lines are amazing! Thank you for sharing

  5. Lovely drawings and your graphite-free one is amazing.

  6. Very nice drawings, indeed! You did a fine job with both drawings and chose interesting subjects. And, lucky you to have a sunny day! It really lifts the spirits. nancy

  7. How fun. You got out in the fresh art and could do art. Lovely drawings.

  8. I’m a pencil addict too. Occasionally I’ll pull out the pen, but pencil sketches always turn out to be my favorite in the end! These are great sketches!

  9. Thanks everybody!
Suzanne—A sketchcrawl is like a pub crawl only instead of drinking you sketch together going from spot to spot. It’s much more fun, imo! Go to this website to the forum page and you might find one in your area http://www.sketchcrawl.com/.
Phyllis–Actually I did the pen one first but couldn’t take living on the edge for long so went to pencil. Good thought to do it the other way around though!

  10. These are just wonderful

  11. You’re going solo with the pen, too, huh? Great sketch. I’d love to see the ink one, flaws and all. Sketchcrawls sound great too, maybe one day I’ll go on one.
