Robin and Snowdrops

I think Robins are fine birds, with their sensible, matronly chirp, and determined tug of wars with those tenacious worms. Plus you really have to be special to lay sky blue eggs!

I sketched this scene of a robin a couple of weeks ago and painted the robin but didn’t have time to finish the rest until today. I found the robin very difficult to sketch but easy to paint–the opposite of what I expected. Not only was he was moving around a lot but getting his proportions right was tricky.  I finally took a photo and finished it in my studio. A note added later: Just to clarify-I did the robin and snowdrops in graphite from life but corrected the robin and painted him from a photo I took.

  1. This is a lovely study of a robin – don’t you just love them? They’re so feisty and comical. The snowdrops are beautiful too – you could use this image for a Christmas card!

  2. Gorgeous! I also like those snowdrops! Very nice!

  3. Great job of it! I love the colors! And the waterlily on the previous post is excellent too!

  4. You did this on location? Fabulous!!! How much did you get done before he wouldn’t sit still anymore?

And did you know that chickens can also lay blue eggs? My friend just bought some chickens that lay pastel-colored, Easter-like eggs to sell. Imagine that!

  5. Krista, Sorry if I wasn’t clear–I sketched the robin in pencil while he was hopping around and found it very difficult indeed. I finally took a photo and used it to refine the sketch and do the watercolor in my studio. Wow, I didn’t know that chickens can lay blue eggs!

Leslie, Dragana, Raena and Krista, Thanks for your comments!

  6. You’ve shown a lot of motion and personality in your bumblebee and I love the way you write, especially about your robin and its sky blue eggs.

  7. I do love a robin, and you’ve captured him perfectly!

  8. Really nice. You’ve made a lovely picture.

  9. Regardless of the method, the outcome is great! I love robins (saw my first one of the season 2 days ago – I was thrilled!). Happy spring! nancy

I would love to hear from you...
