Beginning to Bloom

A friend of mine inspired me to paint this rose. She has been through a lot, and is now going through the process of healing. She reminds me of a blossoming rose.

I hope that as I get a better feel for how to use watercolors, I can develop a more painterly style.  For now I am concentrating on the basics of getting a fair representation of my subject down.  I am finding that much depends on the amount of water, both on the brush and on the paper, and how the two interact.  I used a photo I took awhile back as a reference for this rose.

  1. I’m not an expert on what the “painterly” style is (and I think my painting professor would have agreed when I was in his class), but I love the seamless style you’ve incorporated!

  2. This is simply gorgeous Janene! I love how beautifully your drew and painted the rose, but then also how you composed it within the rectangle and allowed it to go outside the wonderful edging. Sometimes I think, when we create art for others we love and who are enduring difficult times, our love and compassion for them comes out in our art. It seems so in this rose. Happy Day to you!

  3. Your rose is a winner!

  4. Delicate and pretty and extremely well executed!

  5. The rose is just gorgeous! I really like the composition, the colors, the values and well, everything. Great job.

  6. This is so lovely, such wonderful soft colors and a great composition.

  7. Very masterfully done. Wonderful composition, sketching, and painting. Lovely art all the way around. Thanks for sharing it.

  8. It is beautiful, Janene!

  9. Ditto!

  10. Reminds me of my mom because that’s her favorite right there, but I would say it’s anybody’s favorite because it’s just so well drawn!
