On a recent road trip, I decided to try my hand at depicting the billowing cumulus clouds overhead in my little 3.5″ x 5.5″ moleskine. Wow–what a challenge! Here are my three little sketches done as we whizzed along down the freeway. Btw, not to worry, my husband was driving!
The maples along the forest edge were starting to change color and really stood out against the dark backdrop of the Douglas firs.
The Tacoma Dome is always impressive as it suddenly come into view around the curve. This time I was concentrating on the clouds, but it would be fun to do a sketch with more of the structure in it sometime. Btw, the cloud really did have an odd shape like that!

This blog is about my journey as a botanical artist--what I am learning, what inspires me and what I am currently drawing or painting. My desire is to continually hone my skills to better express my wonder and gratitude for the beauty of the creation around me in the Pacific Northwest (USA).
Beautiful and powerful clouds. I wish I could draw like that while sitting in my art room let alone in a car.
Thanks so much for sharing,
xoxo
Wonderful rendition of these big fluffy clouds !
Vicki and Martine, Thank you for your comments. It seems like the most dramatic clouds are in spring and autumn, at least here in the Pacific Northwest.
These are beautiful!
You captured these really well, I’m in the middle of painting a big cloud scene and it’s one of the hardest things I’ve painted so far, well done!
I think you have captured them very well.
Fantastic clouds!
Wonderful skies!
The top sketching is striking! Love those clouds.
