We spent some time on the Hawaiian island of Kauai this summer, and fell in love with the natural beauty of the island. One of my favorite memories is of our hike along an unspoiled beach.
In one area we could hear air wheezing up through cracks in the stone at our feet because the waves had worn away the base of the cliff. This fisherman was standing on an outcropping, which after I started sketching it, I realized looks like a dragon.
The ocean is an amazing bright turquoise color in Hawaii, especially close to the shore.
We saw many exotic tropical plants during our visit, one of which was this remarkable Ponytail Palm that I sketched at a botanical garden.

This blog is about my journey as a botanical artist--what I am learning, what inspires me and what I am currently drawing or painting. My desire is to continually hone my skills to better express my wonder and gratitude for the beauty of the creation around me in the Pacific Northwest (USA).
Janene, this is a gorgeous painting of the fisherman on the rock. I like how you sculpted the rock with all those different shades of brown. I really love the frothy, bubbly surf that you captured, too. What a great memory of your trip!
Thanks so much, Vicki! Kauai is quite an amazingly beautiful place in its own unique way.
I love the composition of the first one. We have a ponytail palm at my house, much more mature than the one you painted (and painted beautifully, I might add). I was looking at it just today, admiring it, wondering how long it will live. I’d hate to lose that tree.
Your use of the watercolour is so delicate, I really like the sea and the foam.
Beautiful, Janene ~ I can almost hear the waves!
Thanks, Dan, Cathy and Irene!
I could only imagine how breathtaking the scenes are. Your beautiful drawings really do help, and I love just how things are ‘untouched’ by civilization
Beautiful paintings Janene
Sounds like a wonderful vacation, Janene, and love the play of colors on the rocks!
