Cabbage Drawing, SBA Sketchbook

I am starting on my diploma portfolio as I near the completion of the SBA course in March. Above is my initial drawing for the vegetable or fruit assignment…lots ‘o shading of crinkly leaves ahead!

I recently hit the veggie jackpot when I visited the Portland Farmer’s Market.  Even in December, they had lush stacks of beautiful, fresh vegetables, newly harvested from nearby farms. As you might expect for this time of year they had lots of root vegetables and cabbages, some looked very exotic indeed.  I bet you never thought of a cabbage as exotic before, well I didn’t either!

Vendors leave the leaves attached on the root vegetables so you can see the freshness of the produce, which is great for artists who want to do a complete portrait.  As you might imagine, I had a hard time selecting from these enticing candidates but decided that the purplish fellow in the rear had star potential…we will see how it goes…

  1. Oh how lovely! A Cabbage – and one with lots of purple tinges to the greens. It’s going to be an absolute delight to paint. I wish you all the very best with it as a cabbage fan. Lucky you have a market to go to nearby, it makes all the difference! Merry Christmas Janene – have a good’un!

    • Thanks, Jessica! I am realizing that the Brassica family (cabbage and relatives) has many entrancing members–I am drawn to them too. I think it’s the bold, undulating leaves that do it for me, but they have many other charms as well.

  2. Your cabbage looks lovely Janene … a lot of work there but will make a beautiful painting.
